Moderate fitness. There are optional hikes of 5–8 km on Days 2 and 4–5, and a 3-hour beginner-friendly horse ride at Song-Kul. You don't need to be an athlete — comfortable walking 4–5 hours with breaks is enough.
Song-Kul lake sits at 3,016m and you cross Kalmak-Ashuu pass at 3,446m. Most travellers feel mildly out of breath on arrival; serious altitude sickness is rare since you sleep there only one night. Drink water, take it slow on Day 5, and avoid alcohol the first night at the yurt camp.
Layers (yurt nights can drop to 5°C even in July), a warm fleece or down jacket, waterproof shell, sturdy hiking shoes, hat and gloves, thermal underwear if travelling May or September, sunscreen, sunglasses, a head torch, and a small daypack. Yurt camp has shared bedding and basic facilities.
Yes. Both are well-handled even at the yurt camp — let us know on inquiry and we brief the herder family in advance. Halal is the default in Kyrgyzstan. Vegetarian at altitude leans on bread, dairy, vegetable soups, and rice dishes.
June to mid-September. Song-Kul road only opens after snow melt, typically late May or early June. July–August are warmest. September has cooler nights but golden light and far fewer travellers.
